Laser Care FAQs

Hair Removal

Q: How does the Hair Removal Treatment work?

A: The visible light from the applicator is guided via a glass prism to the chosen treatment area. Hair which contains sufficient amounts of pigment(melanin) will absorb the light and convert it into heat. This heat is drawn down into the root of the hair(follicle) and rendered unable to produce a new hair.

Q: How do I know if I'm suitable?

A: As the treatment relies on absorption of light in the melanin of the hair, the most effective treatment, and the best results are seen with darker hair types. Also paler skin is most suited to the laser and results are more dramatic. However the unique software of the Pulsed Light System has pre-programmed settings for different hair and skin colours that adjust the energy output accordingly.

During your in depth consultation with us here in the clinic, we will also make sure that medically you are not contra-indicated to the Laser. This is done by going through some simple questions with you. Very few people can not be treated, as the procedure is non-invasive and safe.

Q: How long does the average treatment take?

A: It only takes a max of 30 minutes to treat a small area, such as the face, bikini or under-arml. Larger areas like legs or full back treatment for men, will take 60 to 90 minutes.

 Q: Does It Hurt?

A: No, the procedure is virtually painless. It is best described as a quick flash of heat to the skin. It is far less painful than waxing or electrolysis. There are no side-effects other than a little redness, which usually lasts for 20 minutes.

Q: How many treatments do I need?

A: Hair growth is cyclical as hair follicles go through resting and growing phases. Only follicles in the growth phase contain hair and are destroyed by heat. Resting hair follicles need to enter the growth phase before they can be destroyed by the light. It is therefore necessary to repeat the treatment at intervals until all hair follicles have been through the growth phase.

The length and timing of the growth cycles are affected by numerous factors such as body site, hair density, thickness of hair, ethnic origin, hormonal status and age. Usually 4-6 treatments are required and the intervals between are typically 6 weeks to 3 months.

Q: Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?

A: It is essential not to have hair removed by waxing or other methods prior to Laser, for maximum benefit. We would recommend you stop waxing at least 4 weeks before commencing with our treatment.

It is also advisable to avoid tanning for 2 weeks beforehand, so as to have the skin as pale as possible.

Aftercare is minimal, we recommend you use a high sunscreen for the weeks after treatment.

 Q: Is it affordable?

A: Yes. Due to the lengthy intervals between treatments, it is easily budgeted for. It works out less expensive than any other method of hair removal.
